Richmond Police F.A.Q.

How do I get a copy of a police report?

Police or motor vehicle accident reports can be obtained at the police station Monday ~ Friday from 7:00 a.m. ~ 3:00 p.m. Other times can be scheduled by calling ahead to the station at (207) 737-2615 or you may e-mail your request. Please have the case number or the date and time of the incident that you are requesting a report on. There will be a reasonable fee of $1.00/page for all reports. When requesting reports by mail, please send a check for the required amount along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Do you provide fingerprinting and/or specialized fingerprinting services?

Any Richmond Police Officer is able to take fingerprints for citizens at any time of the day. There is no charge for this service. Citizens requesting fingerprinting services are generally required to provide the fingerprint card. We do have children’s print cards available and these are also free of charge.

How can I protest a parking or traffic ticket?

Option 1 If you receive a municipal parking ticket or State of Maine traffic citation which you feel is unjustified or was issued due to circumstances beyond your control, you are encouraged to contact the officer who issued you the ticket to explain your position. If you are not satisfied with the officer’s response, you may contact Chief Richard Heald. Chief Heald is not able to order any officer to rescind a ticket but will take complaints or concerns about the officer’s action, demeanor or language.
Option 2 If you would like a Maine District Court trial on any traffic citation, all of the instructions for this are included on the copies of the ticket you were issued. You may contact the District Court Violations Bureau at (207) 783-5422 with any question.

Why am I asked so many questions when I call the police?

Our dispatchers are trained to gather as much information as possible in order to determine the nature and seriousness of your call. This information is critical for the responding officer’s safety and the safety of the public. On emergency calls, the dispatcher will relay information to the responding officer(s) while asking you additional questions.

Can the Richmond Police open my car if I have locked my keys inside?

Richmond Police officers have access to a wide range of tools for unlocking vehicles and we can attempt to assist motorists with a lockout. The registered owner or operator will have to sign a waiver that releases the department from liability before we can attempt to unlock your vehicle. Should the officer be unable to get into the vehicle, we can also call a reliable locksmith or tow operator for you.

How can I find out if someone is in jail, when someone in jail can be visited or any other information about persons in jail?

Please contact the Sagadahoc County Corrections Department at (207) 443-8229.

Can I make a police report over the telephone or does a police officer have to come to my house?

While some reports can be taken over the phone, most will require an officer to respond to the scene.

We have a problem with speeders in our neighborhood. What can we do about it?

Call the Police Department and ask to speak to the duty officer. The officer will generate an incident report that every patrol officer will read and they will be able to place your neighborhood on directed enforcement.

Are there any parking restrictions within the Town of Richmond?

Like most places, the Town of Richmond has clearly marked fire lanes, no parking areas and handicapped only parking areas. We also have a winter parking ban that runs from November 15th until April 16th. The ban prohibits parking on any public way from 11:00 p.m. ~ 6:00 a.m. The ban assists the Public Works Department in their snow removal duties.

How do I apply for a position with the Richmond Police Department?

All persons interested in a law enforcement career in the State of Maine have to be certified by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. There are two levels of certification, Full-time and Part-time. Full-time law enforcement officers have to attend the 18-week Basic Academy within one year of their being hired full time. Part-time officers (sometimes referred to as Reserves) must successfully complete the 100-Hour Pre-Service Academy. No person may work as a law enforcement officer in Maine without (at a minimum) the 100-Hour certification. All candidates for police officer in the Town of Richmond must submit a completed Police Department application and then successfully complete a physical agility test, oral board interview, background check, psychological exam and polygraph exam. Application packets may be obtained at the police department, or by calling the Police Department at (207) 737-2615 or mailing a request to P.O. Box 93, Richmond, ME 04357.
