A Message from Marian Anderson, Town Manager
The Town of Richmond is a vibrant and friendly community of approximately 3,411± residents nestled on the shore of the Kennebec River. The upper reaches of Merrymeeting Bay, a unique inland estuary, borders Richmond as does the State of Maine owned Swan Island.
Richmond’s heritage of ice cutting, ship building, textile mills, and farming is slowly being replaced with modern day small businesses, many of high technology in nature. The Richmond Business Park is the home of Hodgdon Yachts, Inc., makers of fine craftsmanship vessels. Also resides Schucks Lobsters, Inc., renowned world wide for their gourmet product.
The community has a rural feel with open space and working farms. The town is committed to growth in a slow and acceptable manner, geographically well positioned between Portland and Augusta and I-295.
Richmond offers a unique variety of services. Municipal government offers a full service town office, a full time Police Department, a full time Public Works Department, a dedicated on call Fire Department, water and sewer utilities district, a health center, summer recreation for children, youth basketball and softball leagues and a self contained school system, K-12. Richmond has enjoyed a stable tax rate despite recent difficult economic times.
A variety of businesses are flourishing on a revitalized Main Street which include real estates offices, insurance, convenience stores, gas stations, grocery store, hardware, banking, funeral home, car washes, used cars, vehicle repair, home heating, flower shop, marina, restaurants and more…
The town maintains a beautiful waterfront park on the Kennebec River. Boat launch facilities along with spacious docking, moorings, water, electricity and septic pumping are available to boat owners. Fort Richmond Park is usally bustling with recreational activity.
Peacock Beach a State Park is maintained on Pleasant Pond that offers picnicking and swimming. A public boat launch is also provided. The 138± acre town forest located on the Dingley Road is available for hiking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, bicycling and snowmobiling. It is truly a remarkable place to work, live and play!
Invest in Richmond! You’ll be glad you did!
